Jiyan descends from Indo-Iranian gʷeih₃- (to live), the same root behind Avestan jīi- and Sanskrit jīv-. In Kurmancî the verb is jîn / jiyîn (to live); jiyan is the abstract noun. The slogan Jin, Jiyan, Azadî deliberately puts these three roots in a row.
