Etymology
Root: gul + -istan · Persian
Gulistan is the place of roses — the rose garden. The -istan suffix is one of the most productive place-naming morphemes of the Iranian world (compare Kurdistan, Hindustan). Sa‘di of Shiraz used the word as the title of his celebrated 1258 prose work.
